Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok… Many platforms offer or want to set up paid subscriptions giving access to new content or features. Users are more or less willing to pay depending on the benefits offered.
At a time when we are already paying for streaming platforms, music or media, another sector is increasingly turning to paid subscriptions: that of social networks. Since the beginning of the year, many have announced that they are testing or launching this type of formula. Instagram and TikTok are currently conducting tests allowing certain creators to offer exclusive content or features to subscribers. For its part, Snapchat has just launched its paid formula called Snapchat + in several countries – including France – two weeks after the revelations of this project. Telegram also recently unveiled its Premium subscription which offers several advantages.
If social networks claim to want to help creators or offer new features to users with their offers, their goal is obviously to diversify their sources of income. Being free since their beginning, they intend to become paid, but not for everyone. A question then arises: are users ready to pay on these platforms?
Between interesting subscriptions…
The idea of paid subscriptions on social networks is not new. Some platforms have been offering it for years, like YouTube. Launched in 2014 (under the name of Music Key), YouTube Premium allows – for 11.99 euros per month – to watch videos without advertising, using other applications or with the screen off. With this formula, it is also possible to download content so that you can watch it offline. The YouTube Music audio streaming service also offers the same benefits for 9.99 euros per month.
