Beware of job scamming! – Police warn of scams

The fact that fraudsters also repeatedly use resourceful methods to get money is shown by a phenomenon called “job scamming”, which is currently increasingly preoccupying the responsible criminal investigators in the police headquarters in south-east Hesse. The crooks create fake job advertisements on the Internet, mainly on job or Internet sales portals. Here, with supposedly very good pay, a job with free time management and the prospect of a home office is often feigned. In many cases, the perpetrators initially pay a small amount of money to lure the victims – thus luring a large number of potential victims. Victims are usually offered to work as testers of banking apps or have to go through a selection process, which usually takes place online. In both cases, the perpetrators persuade the victims to disclose personal data and pictures via video identification procedures, which the scammers use to open real bank or bitcoin accounts in the names of the victims.

The victims are then asked to forward the account opening documents (PIN/TAN, etc.) that were sent to the perpetrators. The forwarding of the documents is supposed to serve to close the accounts opened by the “employer” after successful testing. The perpetrators change the online access data for the accounts immediately after receiving the documents, so that the victims have no access to the account(s) from this point in time .have the opened accounts. In some cases, accounts are already opened by the perpetrators with the name of the applicant, but with incorrect contact details. This means that the perpetrators can access the account as soon as the applicant opens it. And this is where the sophisticated fraud continues: The accounts are now used for payments from other criminal activities, such as goods fraud. The perpetrators offer high-quality goods on the Internet, such as smartphones or garden tools, cheap as fake offers. If a third party buys the supposedly cheap offer and transfers the money to the previously opened account, the money is gone – it is immediately forwarded to other accounts abroad. In most cases, the entire communication between perpetrators and victims takes place via messenger services The victims are usually only informed about the fraud weeks or months later, for example when a victim of goods fraud reports or the district court reports that the account has been seized. Then the victims even face trouble because of suspected money laundering.

This is what happened to a 42-year-old from the Maintal area, who had opened an account with an online bank against payment and submission of personal data and used it to transfer money from suspected fraudulent transactions – until the bank reported it. The 42-year-old had no access to the account he believed from the start.

A 28-year-old man from the district of Offenbach, who accepted an alleged app testing job on the Internet to increase his salary, was also taken in by the crooks. He also had to confirm his identity with an identification program. The alleged company pages on the Internet looked serious to the job seeker, so he did not become suspicious. He had carried out this procedure at a total of three banks. The accounts were then misused by the perpetrators for goods fraud. The “job seeker” only found out about the scam when the police received reports.

The police therefore advise:

  • Within an application process, an account opening via video identification process should be rejected in any case.

  • If such a procedure has already taken place, the account should be blocked immediately.

  • Back up chat histories and in any case file a criminal complaint with the police if you have transmitted your data to a stranger.
