Of course, women have always been killed, says Reinhard Haller, but earlier it was more about sexual murders. “Today, on the other hand, we have more of these affective crimes and the new form of murdering women, you really have to say that,” said Haller in the “Bei Budgen” interview series. “Their character has changed over the past three or four years, because the focus is on revenge, paying back.”
In the past, murder often occurred in the course of an argument, says Haller. The perpetrator grabs the weapons that are always here – hands or kitchen knives. “And the perpetrator was stunned afterwards, couldn’t understand it, called the rescue himself,” said the court psychiatrist. “Today it has changed, today the perpetrator in many cases lies in wait for the female victim, in front of the workplace, in front of the kindergarten, in front of the shopping center. Basically executes it publicly and afterwards is downright proud, I don’t want to say, but at least he feels it was a fair cause.”

Forensic psychiatrist for almost 40 years
Reinhard Haller, who actually wanted to become a priest, has been a psychiatrist and court expert for almost 40 years. He has now been involved in thousands of trials, including those against serial killer Jack Unterweger and letter bomber Franz Fuchs. The 70-year-old explored the human psyche in numerous books. His current book is about “How hatred arises and what it does to us”, and Haller also deals with the subject of femicide.
According to the court psychiatrist, he examined around 32 woman killers: “And when you talk to them, you always have the impression afterwards that I’ve actually spoken to the victim.” It’s always about insults and the fear of being deprived of love which these men could not handle.
“Our image of men should change”
There will probably be no short-term solutions to this violence against women, says Haller in “Bei Budgen”. In the medium term, one would have to start with the perpetrators. So our image of men would have to change: “That a man can also show weaknesses, that one can also be desperate.” If it were possible for men to be allowed to have warm feelings again, “then the cold ones would have, and closed Of course, murder belongs to them in the last resort, no more room,” the court psychiatrist hopes.
