A month ago, four general practitioners agreed to return to service and come together in this hospital in Avesnes-sur-Helpe in the North. They don’t want to abandon their patients. Like Dr. Bénédicte Moreau, the other three also juggle their schedule as young retirees to ensure daily permanence. In this town of Avesnes-sur-Helpe near Maubeuge (North), around 3,000 patients no longer have an attending physician. This is particularly the case of this father. And that’s good; because Christian Castel, 72, was ready to continue working. But this retired general practitioner excludes the constraints of a private practice. These four doctors are employees of the hospital. They are paid an average of 1,000 euros per month for one day of work per week. For Serge Gunst, director of the hospital center in the region, even temporarily, it’s a boon, as he explains in the 20H of TF1. And it is only at the hospital that doctors are asked to play extra time. This is also the case in nursing homes. In France, nearly 10% of GPs would already combine employment and retirement.
