Two UK police officers have been fired for sending offensive messages to a private group, including making racist jokes about a member of the royal family, Newsweek reports.
Constable Sukdev Jher and Paul Hefford were sacked from the Metropolitan Police’s Forensic Service for making racist comments about Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. Another police officer has been charged.
As it turns out, in 2018, the trio exchanged several racist jokes about Meghan Markle in a private group on the WhatsApp messaging app.
The police officers sent a variety of offensive, rude comments to the group, which included several other colleagues.
Shortly after Harry and Meghan’s wedding, a very crude, offensive cartoon was sent to the group. The racist cartoon was linked to Meghan’s wedding day appearance.
Metropolitan Police Commander John Savell said in a statement: “This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable to anyone, let alone a police officer. The actions of these three are inexcusable.”
One of the sacked police officers denied sharing the cartoon on a chat group to make fun of Megan during a hearing into their misconduct. He claimed that he sent the cartoon to warn his colleagues that it was “circling the Internet”.
However, at the court hearing held on July 1, it was confirmed that the police officers sent the cartoons to others as a joke to get a laugh. This was discovered after investigators examined all the group’s correspondence.
As it turns out, racist jokes of this type were not uncommon in the trio’s band. They mocked not only Megan, but other persons as well.
