Summer holidays in Hamburg and high activity at the airport: Today is expected to be the day with the highest number of passengers during the holidays – with 43,000 people and 155 take-offs and 155 landings planned.

The queues and waiting times at Hamburg Airport were largely limited until midday on Friday. According to the federal police, the passengers had to wait an hour and a half before they could go through the security checkpoint. The number of passengers was particularly high in the early morning before 6 a.m. and then again just before noon. “It’s the start of the holidays. You can tell that. It’s always quite crowded in the terminals,” said an airport spokeswoman.

Federal police speak of “wave movements”

At times, however, there was so little going on at the security checkpoints that the passengers were done with it within a maximum of 15 minutes. “These are always waves,” said a spokesman for the federal police. Both the federal police and the airport emphasized that most passengers were patient and very well prepared on Friday and had heeded the tips for the time before departure. This includes that travelers should be at the terminal about two and a half hours before the flight.

Up to 280,000 passengers per week expected

Many planes took off on Friday towards Palma de Mallorca, Istanbul, Madrid, Varna, Paris and Barcelona. At first there were only minor delays, and a flight to Frankfurt was canceled. Overall, the airport expects up to 280,000 passengers per week at the beginning of the holidays.

“Check your phone in the morning”

In the coming days, however, there could still be short-term flight cancellations by the airlines, an airport spokeswoman had already emphasized on Thursday. “We would therefore always recommend that passengers check their cell phones again in the morning to see how things are going with the flight they want.”
