The Blue House in Zaandam, painted by Claude Monet in 1871, is getting its original color back. An expert has been researching the paint for a long time and is happy that the building is finally getting the right color, reports NH News.

Until 2014, it was not clear whether the house on Hogendijk was really blue when Monet painted it, or whether the French impressionist had used his imagination.

54 layers
Paint expert and Monet guide Frits Schuster investigated the 54 layers of paint on one of the building blocks dating from 1724. The 46th layer of paint turned out to be a striking blue. His discovery led to the house being painted blue in 2014, but the result was disappointing to the paint expert.

“I was very proud of myself at the time. But I knew right away that it wasn’t quite the right shade of blue. It couldn’t be reversed because a Monet blue color was specially made.”

The correct color was found through microscopic examination. Painters started working with the authentic color this afternoon. The color is slightly greener and darker than with the previous coat of paint.

The French painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) lived in Zaandam for several months in 1871. He made several paintings of the Zaan region. ‘La Maison Bleue’ has always remained one of his most cherished copies because his wife and child are depicted at work.
