OnePlus says goodbye to Nord as an internal smartphone division

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G

After Realme and iQOO, OnePlus is expected to say goodbye to the Nord product range. Nord will independently develop and launch (midrange) smartphones.

OnePlus follows a well-known Chinese recipe with the step to let the Nord smartphone division spread its wings. OPPO, Xiaomi and Vivo led OnePlus to let a mid-range smartphone brand flourish under its own wings, and then market the brands independently. From the beginning of the Nord series, the company worked towards its own character. With this, the manufacturer wanted to appeal to young people in particular. Presumably this character will form the basis of Nord, if TheMobileIndian is right with its rumors.

Link between Nord and OnePlus

Nord should be able to further expand its influence in the midrange segment by decoupling OnePlus. This will probably lead to a more extensive range of telephones in the future. Under the wings of OnePlus, the Nord range with three devices and a range of accessories has remained relatively limited. It is unknown exactly which path Nord will take. Currently, the OnePlus subdivision is mainly working on phones from around 300 to 400 euros. The brand may be settling in both lower and higher price ranges, which we have also seen with OPPO’s sub-brand, Realme.

A complete split from OnePlus does not seem to be on the agenda for the time being. TheMobileIndian states that Nord will continue to make it clear with references such as “from OnePlus” or “a OnePlus brand” that the division is supported by OnePlus (and therefore also by sister brand OPPO). It is known, however, that Nord will operate as an independent brand, with its own branding, its own team and eventually even its own stores.

New course for OnePlus

What exactly the disappearance of Nord as a smartphone series will mean for OnePlus is currently unknown. Over the past year, the Chinese OPPO subsidiary relied more and more on its Nord segment, while the high-end offering was significantly stripped down. The company released only one high-end phone out, with one more high-end phone to be announced in the books for 2022. It’s coffee grounds to look at, but OnePlus may choose the path of OPPO. That company brought the Realme subdivision – aimed at cheaper smartphones – on the market, but remained active in the development and sales of midrange smartphones.
