New corona mutation discovered in New York

The new corona variant could be resistant to the previously approved vaccines.

American scientists have found evidence of a new corona variant in New York City’s wastewater. As the German “Tagesschau” reports, the mutation has a unique constellation.

Virologist John Dennehy and his team are concerned: “We have encountered virus fragments that have a unique constellation of mutations. This structure that we found in this New York twist hasn’t been seen anywhere else in the world.”

No immediate danger

It is possible that the virus is already preparing to take the immune system by surprise in a new form, the researchers sound the alarm. “We have discovered mutations that have developed resistance to antibodies or certain vaccines,” says microbiologist Monica Trujillo. It is also possible that the virus is transmitted by a jellyfish other than a human.

So far, the researchers have not been able to find the source of the mutation – rats, for example, are suspected. However, the scientists reassure: There is currently no reason to assume that it is directly dangerous for humans.
