The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer. The virus is transmitted through sexual relations or intimate skin-to-skin contact.
About 80 percent of the population is infected with it, and 1 percent of female carriers will develop cervical cancer at some point if they are not treated in time. However, HPV disappears spontaneously in 4 out of 5 women.
