Cooper led the team at Motorola responsible for the development of the first cell phone in the 1970s. He became the first person in history to make a mobile phone call in public in 1973.
He is now known as the “Father of the Cell Phone.” Although he is known as the inventor of the cellphone, he admits that he doesn’t use cellphones very often. He spends less than five percent of his time on his cell phone.
In fact, he couldn’t believe that anyone would spend more than five hours on their cell phone. “You actually spend five hours a day? Stop and enjoy life,” Cooper said MetroMonday (4/7/2022).
How much time do we spend on cell phones?
Cell phones are an important device for our lives. Not only for communicating, cell phones are also useful as a means of entertainment, such as browsing Twitter or scrolling videos on TikTok. However, you may be surprised, during our lifetime, we spend almost a decade on cell phones.
A study by WhistleOut surveyed 1,000 users smartphone America to see how much time is spent on cell phones and the results are surprising. The survey found that millennials born in 1981-1996 spend almost a quarter of their real life on their mobile phones. This equates to 23.1 percent of their day.
However, this figure fell for Generation X who were born in 1965-1980 as much as 16.5 percent. In fact, for the Baby Boomers group born in 1946-1964 with 9.9 percent.
In addition, the researchers also calculated the average number of hours a day spent on the phone. Studies reveal results that vary widely between generations. The average screentime per day for the millennial group was 3.7 hours, Gen X spent an average of 3 hours, and Boomers were the lowest at 2.5 hours.
By crunching the numbers, WhistleOut was able to estimate that the average phone user over their lifetime will spend 8.74 years on their phone. However, they explained, especially for millennials, the number of phone usage is high because of the technology-focused work they do.
