NEW YORK – Two men were shot and wounded Sunday night in Queens, the New York City Police and Fire Department announced. One of them was a prison officer who was off duty, two police sources told our sister network. NBC 4.
According to the preliminary report, the shooting occurred at around 8:04 pm in the section of 214th Place & Jamaica Aveen Queens Village.
The officer allegedly observed the suspect pull out a gun and shoot at a vehicle, sources with knowledge of the case said. At that point, the off-duty uniformed officer allegedly returned fire and hit the alleged gunman three times in the body, the sources added.
A second suspect then shot the officer, striking him once in the left leg, authorities with knowledge of the investigation said.
The prison officer and the first suspect were transported to area hospitals and are expected to survive, according to the sources.
Three shell casings of unknown caliber were recovered at the scene, they added.
No details have been released about the cause of the shooting or the other suspected gunman.
