In an eventful day for many drivers, Gibbs and Larson battled it out up front all afternoon.
Larson won the first 2 stages after leading a race-high 32 laps and was apparently on course for victory in his first series start since 2018.
However, the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports team’s lead was scuppered by caution with 2 laps to go, the result of a brake issue on Cole Custer’s No. 07 car, which sent him crashing. against the wall and end his solid day, when he was running 3rd.
That stacked Larson and Gibbs side by side for the final 2-lap restart.
Larson took the lead again, but on the white flag lap, Gibbs made a dazzling move past Larson and held his charge through the remaining corners, forcing the reigning Cup Series champion to settle for second. Josh Berry, Austin Hill and Brandon Jones rounded out the Top 5.
The most notable incident of the day was the result of a heated on-track exchange between Noah Gragson and Sage Karam that resulted in a handful of cars withdrawing from the race.
After Gragson sent Karam hurtling off the track and spinning himself, a dust storm and multi-car accident ensued. Karam retired from the race while Gragson recovered to finish eighth.
Gibbs became the 13th. Different driver to win in all 13 editions of the Xfinity Series race at Road America.
The Xfinity Series returns to action on Sunday, July 9 for the Alsco Uniforms 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway at 5 PM ET (USA Network, NBC Sports App, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
