This law is a direct response to the decision of the Supreme Court to annul the restrictions on the carrying of weapons imposed for more than a century by the authorities of New York.
With our correspondent in New York, Loubna Anaki
In ruling that the people of New York state had a constitutional right to walk freely with arms, the conservative Supreme Court justices pointed to the exception ” sensitive places “, without further details. A vagueness which the governor, Kathy Hochul, and the elected officials of New York have decided to use to limit the carrying of weapons as much as possible.

« Supreme Court decisions are setbacks, but temporary setbacks. Because I refuse to be deprived of my right as Governor of New York to protect our people from gun violence. We will not go back. Judges think they can change our lives with the stroke of a pen, but we have pens too! », estimate Kathy Hochul.
Long list of forbidden places
The new law of New York thus prohibits the carrying of weapons in transport, schools, centers for the homeless, places of health, bars, restaurants, Times Square… The list is still long. If they wish, businesses or private companies will also have the right to deny access to a weapon bearer.
These measures are only the first of a series of laws planned by New York to retaliate after the last shock decisions of the Supreme Court. In particular, the democratic state should include protections for the rights of minorities in its constitution.
