– People need to sharpen up

UP carried out a traffic control on the E18 in Holmestrand on Friday. On the team was the Minister of Justice, who believes everyone must contribute to prevent the increase in traffic accidents.

– It is serious that the death toll has risen so much. People must drive carefully and sharpen behind the wheel, says Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl to NTB.

So far this year, 63 people have died in traffic, twice as many as in the same period last year.

19 fines handed out

When the Emergency Police carried out a traffic control on the E18 at Bentsrudkrysset in Holmestrand, Mehl witnessed that as many as 19 drivers were fined for driving too fast.

– The police do an enormously important job of being out on the roads, being visible, having controls and making sure that people drive as safely as possible. If you are unconcentrated and careless, you put others in danger. I hope that we can all help to make it safer to travel on Norwegian roads, says Mehl.

The development has been negative this year, but the number of fatalities in traffic has decreased since 1970 when 560 people died in traffic.

– The death statistics have reversed this year, but with the right effort I think we can get back on track, but it is a disturbing development. The consequences of looking at a message while driving can be fatal, says Mehl.

Will strengthen the police

To help reverse the development, the Minister mentions, among other things, that the government allocated an additional NOK 200 million to the police in this year’s state budget.

– We will strengthen the police in the years to come, and especially the police who are visible among the people. We believe it is important that we have visible and accessible police in the local community where people travel, says Mehl.
