Canada confirms 278 cases of monkeypox

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam on Thursday (30/6) confirmed a total of 278 cases of monkeypox in the country as of June 29.

Cases of monkeypox have been reported nationwide, including four from the province of British Columbia, five from Alberta, 67 from Ontario and 202 from Quebec, said Tam, a prominent Canadian physician.

Tam reiterated that the risk of exposure to the monkeypox virus is not exclusive to certain groups or circumstances.

“Anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, can be infected and spread this virus if they come into close contact with someone infected with monkeypox or come into direct contact with personal objects or items shared with that person, including towels or bed sheets,” Tam said. .

According to Tam, the latest epidemiological data show that the majority of monkeypox cases infect males between the ages of 20 and 69 years.

Monkeypox is a type of sylvatic zoonoses that can cause infection in humans and is usually found in forested areas of Central and West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus family.

Zoonotic diseases that occur between wild and free-living animals and in captivity, and the transmission of these diseases to the human population are referred to as sylvatic zoonoses.
