Turkey yesterday withdrew its objections to the membership of the two Scandinavian countries in the alliance after intensive negotiations. Biden and Erdogan made a brief statement to reporters today before their meeting began on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid. The US president also thanked Erdogan for Ankara’s efforts to find options for grain exports from Ukraine.
The Turkish head of state, in turn, said that he hoped that through diplomacy the problem with the export of Ukrainian grain could be resolved. Erdogan also expressed hope that NATO expansion would help resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
