The 9-euro ticket has been on everyone’s lips for weeks. I got one too – for June, July and August. But what do you do with it, where do you go? So I came up with the idea that I should go to the three German twin towns and communities Sweating – Karlshuld, Schrobenhausen and Wachenheim – could travel and report on it.

I’ll start with Schrobenhausen, the Bavarian asparagus metropolis in Upper Bavaria. And because Karlshuld and its district of Neuschwetzingen are just a stone’s throw away – exactly 15 kilometers – I will combine both tours. But it’s not that simple. Especially not if you can only use local transport.
During the initial planning, it wasn’t clear whether I would head for Karlshuld or Schrobenhausen first. The Bahn planning app offers many options. First Karlshuld was considered as a goal for the first day. First suggestion: From Schwetzingen by train to Friedrichsfeld, then either via Heidelberg to Heilbronn or via Darmstadt to Aschaffenburg – Würzburg. Or half an hour later via Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, or via Wiesloch, Aalen, Ansbach, Treuchtlingen. Or from Friedrichsfeld via Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg, towards Ingolstadt. Or from Schwetzingen by bus to Pfaffengrund/Wieblingen, from there to Osterburken, Würzburg, Nuremberg, Ingolstadt and finally to Karlshuld.
The next variant calls the stages Wiesloch – Walldorf, Karlsruhe-Durlach, Stuttgart, Ulm, Augsburg, Brunnen (wherever that is), Karlshuld. Or a few minutes later, the route plan reads: Karlsruhe – Aalen – Donauwörth – Neuburg/Donau – Karlshuld. It takes between 6:48 and 7:56 hours with five to seven changes – if everything goes according to plan, which is (currently) rather unlikely with Deutsche Bahn.
But I’ve rearranged it to make it a little easier to start with. So first to Schrobenhausen – in the hope that that doesn’t offer so many alternatives. But far from it. First option: Schwetzingen – Wiesloch/Walldorf – Karlsruhe-Durlach – Stuttgart – Ulm – Augsburg – Aichach – Kühbach – Schrobenhausen. Or completely different: Schwetzingen – Frankfurt – Würzburg – Nuremberg – Petershausen – Schrobenhausen. And there are other routes. I have now decided to start earlier. I will report on which stations in the Friday edition – also during the day online on our social media channels.
In Schrobenhausen and one day later in Karlshuld I will then meet citizens, citizens’ representatives and mayors. I also look at what’s new there, present sights and give gastronomic tips for imitators from Schwetzingen and the surrounding area.
And on Saturday we’re going back to Schwetzingen – I’ll report back on which route.
