At the start of vaccination against COVID-19 for girls and boys aged 5 to 11, 146,699 minors were registered as immunized with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in 11 states of the Republic: Baja California, Campeche, Mexico City, Coahuila, Morelos, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tlaxcala and Veracruz, reported the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez.
“It turned out with a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of participation from the first day. (…) It was a very positive experience, a great collaboration of fathers, mothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, relatives in general of the community; We see again the gestures of solidarity that we had when older adults were vaccinated. (…) We thank the people of Mexico for that discipline, that order, and that solidarity,” she expressed.
In a morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the official reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends applying the second dose of Pfizer four to eight weeks after the first.
He explained that a longer interval between doses is associated with greater effectiveness of the vaccine.
“For girls and boys from 12 to 17 years old, and it will also be for 5 to 11 years old, it is better to wait until the maximum point of that interval, up to 8 weeks, because that has been found to confer a greater degree of protection, of effectiveness in protecting against COVID-19”, he remarked.
He announced that between Wednesday, June 29 and Thursday, June 30, the second shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will arrive with one million 998 thousand pediatric doses in order to continue vaccinating this population sector.
“The recommendation to families is not to stop vaccinating their children, the vaccine is already there, there is the capacity to do it, do not stop vaccinating it. And for fathers and mothers of children from 12 to 14 years old, do not forget the second dose, count between four to eight weeks, if you can wait closer to eight weeks to give the second dose, ”she pointed out.
Increase in COVID-19 cases does not generate a greater impact on hospitalizations and deaths
The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health PromotionHugo López-Gatell Ramírez, reported that COVID-19 cases have increased in the last nine weeks, however, in the fifth wave, unlike the previous ones, the impact on hospitalizations and deaths has been less due to vaccination .
He explained that, as of June 28, the occupancy of general beds rose from four to six percent and from one to two percent in beds with a fan. Mortality increased from five to seven daily deaths on average in recent weeks.
In The Pulse of Healththe official detailed the status of vaccination coverage:
- 91 percent in people 18 years and older.
- 87 percent in those over 12 years of age and over.
- 60 percent, with at least one dose, in people between the ages of 12 and 17.
As of June 28, the coverage of reinforcements in people over 18 years of age is 70 percent with 56,517,414 applied.
The official invited all the people who have not yet applied the reinforcement, who have not yet been vaccinated or who are missing a dose in the scheme, to go to the health units and vaccination cells in their locality.
