At least three dead and dozens injured in US train accident NOW

At least three people have been killed and dozens injured in a train accident in the US state of Missouri, reports CNN† The train collided with a garbage truck at an unguarded level crossing, after which seven trainsets derailed.

The accident happened near the village of Mendon, about 100 miles northeast of Kansas City.

The driver of the garbage truck and two train passengers have died. At the time of the accident, 243 passengers and 12 crew members were on board the Amtrak train.

It is the second time this week that a US passenger train has hit a vehicle. On Sunday, a California train collided with a passenger car at an unguarded railroad crossing. Three occupants of the car were killed and two other occupants were seriously injured. There were no injuries on the train at the time.
