The current corona summer wave in Austria is picking up speed. On Monday, the interior and health ministries reported 6,398 new infections within 24 hours. The seven-day incidence rose to 657.5 cases per 100,000 population. There was also a significant increase in the number of infected hospital patients, 91 more than on Sunday had to be treated in the local hospitals. Austria-wide 777 infected people are currently in the hospital.
Of these, 48 required intensive care. On Sunday there were two fewer seriously ill people. Since last Monday, the number of hospitalized has increased by a third – a total of 190 patients. In the intensive care units, the increase was also a third, so twelve more seriously ill patients had to be admitted. For comparison – two weeks ago, on June 20th, there were 494 hospital patients in Austria, less than 500, since then there has been an increase of 52 percent.
On average, 8,435 new infections were added every day in the past week. On Monday there were 87,996 laboratory-confirmed active cases in Austria, 1,718 more than the day before. Within just one week, the number of actively infected people has almost doubled, compared to 44,415 confirmed cases last Monday.
The death toll is still very high. Four more Covid deaths have been registered since Sunday alone, and 32 since last Monday. In total, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 18,764 lives in Austria since it broke out. However, the federal state figures are still lagging behind, AGES already reported 20,023 fatalities on Sunday.
Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 4,393,255 confirmed corona cases in Austria. 4,286,495 people are considered recovered. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Vienna with 1,031. In the federal capital, however, the good infrastructure is by far the most tested. In the past 24 hours, for example, 2,131 PCR tests per 100,000 inhabitants were analyzed in Vienna, and 642 per 100,000 inhabitants throughout Austria. The fewest analyzes were in Upper Austria with 128 per 100,000 inhabitants.
In Lower Austria, the seven-day incidence is now 766.2, in Burgenland 643.4 and in Vorarlberg 579.4. It is followed by Salzburg (562.1), Styria (484.1), Upper Austria (482.8), Tyrol (436.1) and Carinthia (361).
In the past 24 hours, 60,327 PCR and antigen rapid tests have been registered across Austria – as always on weekends, significantly fewer than during the week. Of these, 57,683 were meaningful PCR tests, eleven percent were positive. On average, 97,694 PCR analyzes were carried out every day in the past week, the positive rate was 8.6 percent.
On Sunday, 225 corona vaccinations were administered across Austria, only four of which were first bites. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,831,429 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 5,571,414 people and thus 62 percent of Austrians have a valid vaccination.
