Mayotte: more than two thirds of the population have already been infected with Covid-19 – LINFO.re

According to an ARS report, seven out of ten residents of Mayotte had already been affected by the coronavirus.

More than two thirds of the inhabitants of the island affected

In partnership with the MODCOV19 platform specializing in the modeling of data related to this virus, the Regional Health Agency and the Regional Health Observatory launched a seroprevalence survey in 2021. The objective is to understand the extent of the consequences from the epidemic to Mayotte.

According to the survey, 75% of the island’s population (that’s seven out of ten) had been infected with the virus, as of October 2021. As related by the site lejournaldemayotte.yt, the virus circulated most strongly at the beginning of the year 2021, Mayotte.

School and professional environments, vectors of contamination

The main declared places of contamination are mainly in professional and school environments. Two out of ten individuals, aged 19 to 59, were infected at their workplace. Among children aged 6 to 18, three out of ten were infected at school.

For people aged 60 and over, the vector of contamination is the family environment, in particular among members living outside the home.

Foreigners more affected than the French

According to the survey, foreign people aged 15 and over were affected more often (77%) than those with French nationality (66%). The natives of Mayotte were more affected by the coronavirus than those from another department (58%).

The survey also specified that people living in permanent housing (70%) were less affected than those living in precarious housing (74%). On whether or not there is access to water in the home, the difference in contamination is more marked, ie 69% for those with water in their homes compared to 77% for those without water.

89% of residents have antibodies against Covid-19

According to survey data, 89% of the population aged 15 or older had antibodies specific for immunity against coronavirus. At the time of the survey, the vaccination rate on the island was 66% among this age group, 45% of whom had a complete vaccination schedule.

For the age group of 15-24 and 45-54 years, the survey found an absence of antibodies for one in ten cases. For those aged 75 or over, the rate of vaccination remained stable before falling.
