The Philadelphia Stars were the best team in the first iteration of the USFL, winning the league championship in two of the three USFL seasons. And now Stars could also win the title in USFL 2.0.
Philadelphia defeated the New Jersey Generals 19-14 today to advance to next week’s USFL championship game.
Although the USFL didn’t really catch on with football fans, on average only 715,000 viewers in the game on television and playing in front of nearly empty stands in Birmingham, the quality of play was solid. Today’s match was a captivating back-to-back fight, which was questioned until the very last minute.
Unlike the regular season, in which all games were played in Birmingham, the playoffs are held in Canton, Ohio, which seemed to have a slightly larger crowd than typical USFL regular season games.
In next week’s championship game, Philadelphia will play the winner of tonight’s game between the New Orleans Breakers and Birmingham Stallions. Breakers-Stallions begins at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.
The championship game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 3 on Fox.
