The rock in the rapids hits the bow hard. The boat turns – and tilts into the waves. The capsizing and a looming storm ended the trip on the Main on the first day. It’s been at least 15 years now. Back then I wanted to canoe down the upper reaches of the river from Mainleus to Bamberg. Completely soaked, I sought shelter from the thunderstorm – and finally waited under a bridge to be picked up. This experience did not diminish my fascination for the river, on the contrary.
