As Russia has cut gas supplies to a number of European countries, including Germany, Italy and Austria, concerns about the coming winter are growing. German politicians have already announced that coal-fired power plants will be more active in the summer to pump as much gas as possible into storage. Austria is also currently preparing for the commissioning of one of the closed coal-fired power plants if necessary.
Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš says that the most important thing for our country at the moment is to build a liquefied natural gas terminal in Estonia by the beginning of the heating season: the whole region could run out of gas at some point during the winter, and then gas consumers would have to go into austerity regime, which would mean that consumers would remain the first priority and the rest would be reduced. a lot more gas than there was at the time. “
Urzula von der Leiena, President of the European Commission, recalled that the work was going in several directions. Attempts are being made to replace Russian gas with other suppliers, to promote energy efficiency and to invest in renewable energy resources.
The head of the commission said that reducing the heating by two degrees or raising the temperature of the air conditioners by the same figure would save the same amount of gas as all supplies from the Nord Stream pipeline. It is therefore important to do more to reduce energy consumption.
“We have reviewed all national contingency plans to make sure all countries are prepared for possible supply disruptions. We are also working with industry and 27 governments on a common European demand reduction plan. We are doing this because we have learned from Covid. 19, which showed that when we act together and in concert, we are strong and can make a huge impact, “said von der Leiena.
