Mexican stabbed to death after incident with US border agent

Tucson (USA), June 24 (EFE)-. A Mexican immigrant, identified as Abigail Román Aguilar, died after receiving several stab wounds and blows apparently after an incident with a border patrol agent in events that occurred on the border of Arizona (USA) and Mexico that are still to be clarified .

The autopsy report from Pima County (Arizona), to which Efe had access, classifies the death as a homicide.

The forensic doctor’s office details that the Mexican, originally from Chiapas, had two wounds caused by a sharp weapon in the chest and injuries and blows to the head, torso and extremities.

For its part, the only information that the Tucson Sector Border Patrol has disclosed is that one of its agents was involved in a use of force incident on May 24 that ended with the death of an immigrant.

The federal agency, which did not identify the victim, said the incident occurred in the border city of Douglas.

“This case is extremely suspicious and worrying, we must investigate exactly what happened,” Vicki Gaubeca, director of the Coalition of Communities of the Southern Border, told Efe.

“A knife is not part of the uniform or the weapons used by the federal agency,” he stressed, noting that it is the first time he has heard of a migrant being stabbed to death by a border agent.

He added that apparently the victim first had an accident trying to cross the border and was injured by the barbed wire for which he was taken to the hospital and released.

He points out that the deadly incident apparently took place when the authorities were preparing to deport him.

“We need to know if there were more agents present who were perhaps able to prevent this situation or perhaps other witnesses,” said Gaubeca, who has requested an investigation report.

For decades, organizations that work along the border with Mexico have denounced cases of abuse of power by Border Patrol agents and have demanded greater transparency when investigating these types of cases.

On February 19, Mexican immigrant Carmelo Cruz Marcos died of multiple gunshot wounds during an altercation with a border agent in Cochise County.

For its part, the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) refused to give statements about the case indicating that it is under investigation.
