Germany announces the launch of the second phase of the gas emergency plan

Moscow is using gas as a weapon against Germany in revenge for Western support for Ukraine after Russia launched an open full-scale war against its neighbor, Habek said.

Germany, like many other European countries, is heavily dependent on Russian gas supplies.

Russia’s energy giant Gazprom reportedly cut gas flows to Germany via the Nord Stream pipeline by 60% last week, saying it was due to long-delayed repairs.

The second phase of the contingency plan is set to start with a “significant deterioration in the gas supply situation,” Habek said.

However, the second phase implies that the German government will still be able to “lead” the situation until further notice.

Habe pointed out that households can help save energy.

Germany has ordered gas storage to be filled to 90% by winter to reduce the risk of gas supply disruptions.

At present, German gas storage facilities are less than 60% full.

However, Germany has managed to reduce the share of gas received from Russia, which was 55% at the start of the Moscow aggression, to 35%.

Germany is looking for new sources of natural gas supply and is accelerating plans to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) by sea.
