The unstoppable Yankees became the first Major League team with 50 wins this season.
Gerrit Cole pitched a no-hitter into the eighth, Aaron Hicks hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer in the ninth when Manuel Margot slammed into the right-field wall, and the Bronx Bombers won 4-2 Monday at Tampa Bay Manta Rays, to establish themselves as the best team in the Majors.
New York has won 17 of its last 19 games going into yesterday’s game, and its 50-17 start is the best in the Major Leagues since the 2001 Seattle Mariners. 12 games over second-place Toronto and Tampa Bay fell to fourth place, 14 games behind in the AL East.
“For us to respond that way just shows what this team is about,” said Aaron Judge, who went 0-for-3 with a walk. “We don’t just live or die by the long ball. We’re just a complete team.”
Cole struck out 12 and walked three. Sonoran Isaac Paredes broke Cole’s gem by leading off the eighth with a single to center field.
Paredes’ compatriot, Jonathan Aranda, an infielder, was promoted yesterday by Tampa Bay, his first call-up to the Majors.
Also, the Mexican Alejandro Kirk (Toronto) widely leads the vote for the All-Star Game among the receivers of the American League.
