Two drones from the direction of Ukraine hit a Russian oil refinery near the border. The incident occurred on Wednesday, causing bursts of fire and plumes of black smoke in the sky.
As a result of the attack, oil refinery operations had to stop producing. Since Putin invaded Ukraine on February 24, the Russian territory bordering the country has received many attacks.
Quoted from Reuters on Wednesday (22/6/2022), the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region came under attack from drones at 8.40 am (0540 GMT). The attack hit the raw refining unit, triggering an explosion and a burst of fireballs.
The second attack at 0623 GMT was aimed at a crude oil reservoir in the refinery area, which is the biggest supplier of oil products in southern Russia. This attack caused no fire or injuries.
“As a result of a terrorist act from the Western border of the Rostov region, two drones attacked the Novoshakhtinsk technological facility,” the refiner said. They said they had evacuated staff and technological equipment to prevent further damage.
Rostov Governor Vasily Golubev said the refinery had stopped operations. He said he had found fragments of two drones around the refinery area.
Meanwhile, videos of drones flying towards the refinery are circulating on social media. It is known that the refinery is only 8 km from the Ukrainian border.
The refinery that was attacked has an annual capacity of up to 7.5 million tonnes, and began operations in 2009. Russia’s energy ministry said the fire had not affected the supply of gasoline and diesel to consumers in southern Russia.
Russia is also investigating the cause of a large fire that erupted at an oil storage facility in the city of Bryansk, 154 km
