Toronto maple Leafs striker Auston Matthews won the Hart Prize for the most useful player in the overseas NHL hockey season for the first time in his career. Vezin’s trophy for the best goalkeeper was awarded to Igor Šestťorkin from the New York Rangers. Cale Makar from Colorado Avalanche became the best defender of the season and the holder of the Norris trophy.
The most prestigious awards ceremony took place in Tampa on a day off between the third and fourth dueling of the Stanley Cup Final.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s a great feeling. I’m glad my family and a lot of great gamers can be here with me. It’s really something special.” said 24-year-old Matthews, who was the top scorer in the competition with 60 goals.
In the press vote, he scored 1,630 points and clearly overtook the other two candidates to win the award – the most productive player of the basic part Connor McDavid from Edmonton (1111) and the goalkeeper Šestťorkin (738).
During the gala evening, Matthews also received the Ted Lindsay Award for the best player of the season according to the votes of the hockey players themselves. They also included him in the first All Star team of the NHL. No Toronto player and no US-born hockey player has scored sixty goals in the season before.
Thanks to him, Toronto also had the most successful season in terms of victories (balance 54-21-7) and points (115) in the history of the club. In the first round of the playoffs, he lost to Tampa Bay. The Productive Center was a candidate to win the Hart Trophy in the previous year as well, when they preferred the voters to McDavid.
In the Canadian scoring of the basic part, Matthews was in sixth place with 106 points, he was the highest in the statistics of shots on goal (348), fifth in the number of winning goals (10) and third in the number of powerlifting goals (16). He scored at least 34 goals in each of his six seasons in the profile, last year he won the scorer table with 41 as well. He is the second native from the USA with Hart’s trophy, the first was Patrick Kane from Chicago in the 2015/2016 season. He won the award as the third Toronto player in history and the first since 1955, when Ted Kenney received it.
In a vote by members of the NHL Players’ Association for the Ted Lindsay Award, Matthews ousted McDavid, a three-time winner of the 2017, 2018 and 2021 awards, as well as Nashville defender and captain Roman Josi.
For the first time in his career, Russian goalkeeper Šestťorkin was looking forward to winning the Vezin Trophy. Twenty-six-year-old NY Rangers had a score of 36-13-4 in 52 captured duels. With an average of 2.07 goals per match and a success rate of 93.5 percent, he achieved the best statistics in the league and brought the Rangers to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. With six shutouts, he was third in the league. Only Europeans fought for Vezin this year, except for the Six, the Swedes Jacob Markström of Calgary Flames and Finn Juuse Saros of Nashville were candidates.
“It means a lot to me. I didn’t think about this award when I came to the NHL. I didn’t catch it in the first preparatory game against the Islanders, but one little kid showed me my picture and it said, ‘For the future winner of the Vezina Trophy.’ I wonder why not? We have a good team. Everyone helped me a lot, it’s a team victory. “ said Sixorkin, who is the third Rangers goalkeeper with the award after John Vanbiesbrouck (1985/86) and Henrik Lundqvist (2011/12).

“I really appreciate it, but for me, the clear goal remains to win the Stanley Cup with Colorado. That’s why I have to turn the page over quickly and be ready for tomorrow.” said Makar, whose team leads the final in the playoffs over Tampa 2: 1 in matches. As the fifth player in history, Norrisa won in the first three full seasons of the NHL – ahead of Adam Fox, Erik Karlsson, Denis Potvin and Bobby Orr (twice).
