This is what southern Hesse looks like in figures

The current statistics from the IHK Darmstadt show where the property tax is highest and the retail trade is most attractive – and much more.

SOUTH HESSEN – southern Hesse (red). How high is property tax A and B in Viernheim? How many trainees are there in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district? And how many employees commute from the Odenwald to the Rhine-Main-Neckar region? Every year, the Darmstadt Chamber of Industry and Commerce publishes fact sheets with current statistical data on the population, the labor market, commuter traffic, the number of IHK-affiliated companies, to sectors such as retail and tourism, but also to municipal taxes and fees.

The survey shows that property tax B for developed and buildable properties in Lautertal has fallen by 200 assessment rate points since the beginning of 2022. Municipalities such as Seeheim-Jugenheim (125.1), Mühltal (117.4) and Zwingenberg (115.8) have a higher retail centrality than the average (100). This means that consumers from other communities also shop because of the attractiveness of retail within the communities.

Economic life in the districts is highlighted on five pages each, such as start-ups, wages and salaries and the availability of fast internet. This makes it clear that 8.6 companies per 1000 inhabitants were founded in the district of Groß-Gerau last year – more than in any other district in southern Hesse. Nowhere since 2007 have so many jobs been created as in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district (plus 30 percent). There is an above-average amount of training in the Odenwald district: there are 4.3 trainees for every 100 professionally qualified employees. Darmstadt lives up to its rank as a science city: 54 percent of all IHK member companies are active in knowledge-intensive branches of industry, which is ten percentage points more than the average for southern Hesse. The lowest unemployment rate in southern Hesse has been in the Bergstrasse district for years (2021: 3.7 percent).
