–Earlier in the day, a Kremlin spokesman said the fate of the Americans depended on a court ruling and that he did not rule out a death sentence against them.
“It is shocking that a Russian official even hints at the death sentence of American citizens … in Ukraine,” said John Kirby, the council’s strategic communications co-ordinator.
He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin, by blocking grain exports from Ukraine, was using food and supplies as weapons.
