Stephen Zabielski, 52, died in battle on May 15. The news was first published by upstate New York newspaper The Recorder on June 1.
Rolling Stone, citing sources, reported that the man from New York died after stepping on a land mine. He leaves behind a wife, five stepchildren, and a grandson.
Zabielski worked with a group of western volunteers, who joined the Ukrainian army.
“He served with 13 English-speaking men on a combat squad called the Wolverines,” said Tristan Nettles, a Marine Corps veteran, who said he was with Zabielski when he was killed. IndependentTuesday (21/6/2022).

“Every member of the group goes on tour in Iraq,” he told Rolling Stone.
In a statement, a spokeswoman for the US State Department said the government had contacted her family and was providing all possible consular assistance.
The spokesman also repeated the Biden administration’s stance on warning Americans against traveling to Ukraine because of the conflict, and the potential for Russian troops to target them. He also added that any US citizens in Ukraine should leave immediately.
