It is common to see news everywhere where there is talk of cancer vaccines, which is not entirely true, despite the fact that research into this condition encompasses various areas within the scientific and health field.
when it comes to cancer this is thought to be a single diseasewhen this is not the case, because cancer is a condition that encompasses many dozens of subclasses of cancer, according to the characteristics it presents.
When talking about this condition in general terms, it must be remembered that each type of cancer should be treated as an independent diseaseespecially when we refer to a new vaccine or cancer treatment.
Fight cancer rectally?
A study was recently published in which a new treatment that proved successful in 12 patients who suffered from a specific type of adenocarcinoma rectal or an advanced type of rectal cancer.
In this study, a dose of delivered every 3 weeks for 6 months, this medicine is characterized by an antibody specifically designed against a cell proliferation control molecule that does not work correctly.
At the close of the study, patients received the standard treatment of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor.
The results of the study were published in the science journal New England Journal of Medicinewhere it was detailed that all the patients responded successfully without presenting remains of their tumor in the six months after finishing the treatment.
Are there vaccines against cancer?
In recent years, scientific teams have focused on designing mechanisms to boost our immune system with the aim of ending tumors and cancer cells.
To achieve this cancer vaccine, different immunotherapeutic strategies have been developed that focus on marking tumors with neon signs so that immune cells can later destroy them.
On the other hand, this strategy must be designed in a personalized way for each type of cancer, since the effectiveness of immunotherapy is only achieved by loading it with the correct markers.
However, another study was published in Nature where very good results were presented on a new vaccine to treat solid tumors which are resistant to other types of therapies.
This cancer vaccine focuses on 2 molecules, MICA and MICB which are the ones that are usually present in solid tumors.
MICA/B molecules work like neon lights that indicate to all cells in the system that there is a danger that must be eliminated, but tumors have camouflage mechanisms and can become invisible.
This latest cancer vaccine restores neon light in tumors and coordinates an attack by T cells and NK cells belonging to the immune system, where it makes them visible and can be destroyed.
These great advances allow us to be ever closer to a cancer vaccine that is totally effective in all types of cases.
