KOMPAS.com – About four to seven times a year, the Earth, Moon, and Sun line up exactly to create a cosmic-scale shadow show known as an eclipse.

The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is tilted relative to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

This tilt is the cause of the eclipse phenomenon occurs only occasionally, not every month.

There are two types of eclipses, lunar eclipse and the sun. During a lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow obscures the Moon. During solar eclipsethe Moon blocks the Sun from view.

A solar eclipse is a celestial phenomenon that occurs when the Earth, Moon, and Sun are aligned in the same plane, and the moon passes between the Earth and the sun to partially or completely cover the Sun.

According to the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), solar eclipse occurs when the position of the Moon is in line with the Earth and the Sun so that it completely or partially obscures the view of the Earth from the Sun.

Types of solar eclipses

Citing Time and Date, there are 4 different types of solar eclipses.

1. Partial Solar Eclipse

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon only partially covers the Sun’s disk and only partially covers its penumbra on Earth.

2. annular solar eclipse

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the disc of the Moon is not large enough to cover the entire disc of the Sun so that the outer edge of the Sun is still visible forming a ring of fire in the sky.

3. Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun.

This phenomenon can only occur when the Moon is near perigee, the point in the Moon’s orbit closest to Earth.

4. Hybrid Solar Eclipse

Hybrid solar eclipses, also known as total annular eclipses, are the rarest type of solar eclipse.

This phenomenon occurs when the same eclipse changes from an annular solar eclipse to a total solar eclipse or vice versa along the path of the eclipse.

Lunar eclipse occurs during the full moon phase. When the Earth is positioned directly between the Moon and the Sun, Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon’s surface, dimming it and sometimes turning the Moon’s surface red for several hours.

According to NASA, there are three types of lunar eclipses:

1. Total Lunar Eclipse

The moon moves into the interior of the Earth’s shadow or umbra. Some of the sunlight that passes through Earth’s atmosphere reaches the Moon’s surface, illuminating it dimly.

2. Partial lunar eclipse

The imperfect alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon causes the Moon to only pass through part of the Earth’s umbra.

The shadow grows and then recedes and does not completely cover the Moon.

3. Penumbral lunar eclipse

The moon moves through the Earth’s penumbra or the faintest outer part of its shadow.

Under these conditions, the Moon appears so dim that it is difficult to see.
