On the social network Twitter, some consumers share their experiences of trying to open Cido Juices. “May all of you have a wonderful day, except for those who decided to make a” Cido “juice cap”, “Now, squeezing the pack, the cap is open. Will Cido wash my bag now if the juice pack opens there? ” – Such and other records indicated that people were unsure whether the caps of the Cido juice packet had been rejected. Also for the author of these lines, the first experience with re-closing the juice pack was not so smooth, but when repeating the operations, it was successful.

Reduces plastics in nature

When the caps are unscrewed, they remain attached to the packaging in order to reduce the release of small plastic waste into the environment and the resulting pollution.

At present, the new sample packs show instructions for use so that the public knows what to do. We asked the beverage manufacturer for an explanation of the reason for the change of packaging.

The company’s representative, Lilita Pelčere, explains that Cido Grupa is the first company in the European Union (EU) to introduce more environmentally friendly corks for all one-liter Tetra Pak cartons in cooperation with Tetra Pak. When the caps are unscrewed, they remain attached to the packaging in order to reduce the release of small plastic waste into the environment and the resulting pollution.

The change ensures that the cork does not disappear in nature, such as in the forest or on the beach, but is recycled with the package. The new cork saves about 7.56 tons of plastic per year, as each new cork saves 0.5 grams of plastic compared to the old cork.

The changes have been introduced because, in compliance with EU requirements, a law has been adopted in Latvia, which stipulates that from July 2024, all corks and caps made of plastic must be inseparable from the packaging of beverages. Cido Grupa is the first beverage manufacturer to already meet this requirement for TP Prisma packaging. Namely, all one-liter juice tetra packs from February this year are produced with the new corks.

To implement this project, Cido Group invested 50 thousand euros. This is just one step towards making the Cido Group fully climate-neutral by 2025 and the most sustainable company in its field. At the same time, other ideas are being implemented that reduce the impact on nature.

For example, the Cido Group is already purchasing 100% renewable electricity from its partners, but the next step is to install solar panels on the roofs of production buildings to generate electricity. The company plans to phase out fossil fuels by 2025, so there is a gradual shift to alternative energy sources to natural gas. ”

With the introduction of the deposit system in Latvia, Cido Grupa plans to recover 85–95% of the total volume of products available for sale. The second step is the transition to fully recycled packaging. Already, all beer and Mangaļi products are produced using fully recycled PET packaging. The company aims to move 100% to fully recycled, recyclable and reusable packaging by the end of 2023.

Competitors – on the same wave

What are other juice producers doing and when are the changes planned? At Orkla Latvija, we found out that the new corks for Gutta’s one-liter packages will be gradually introduced from July this year, and for two-liter packages in January 2023.

Asked whether it will require additional investments, Orkla Latvija representative Lineta Mikša explains that the section of the production line that puts caps on packages will be improved, but it will not require special investments.
