“You will play with Lionel Messi”

Rodrygo Goes has been playing for Real Madrid for three years. Archrival FC Barcelona had also dealt with the highly talented South American at the time. Lionel Messi was considered the bait.

FC Barcelona was one of the clubs that wanted to bring Rodrygo Goes on board three years ago. As the 21-year-old reveals in the Jota Jota podcast, there was even an agreement between Barça and his father, who acts as an advisor.

“Are you waiting for Real Madrid? At Barça you will play with Lionel Messi,” Rodrygo said he heard from his father. A little later, however, the offer from the Spanish record champions came in, and Rodrygo did not hesitate for long on this occasion.

“On a normal day, I came home after a game. My father came into the room with a Real Madrid shirt and a Barça shirt,” Rodrygo recalled at the time. “He asked me to choose one. I chose the Real Madrid shirt.”

Real Madrid invested a basic fee of 45 million euros. After three years at Concha Espina, Rodrygo does not yet have a regular place. His double in the last second in the semi-final second leg of the Champions League against Manchester City (3-1 a.e.t.) has already secured him an entry in the history books.
