With 37.1 degrees measured at the Waghäusel-Kirrlach station on the Upper Rhine, June 18 was also the hottest day of the year so far, the meteorologists report.

However, it is not an absolute June record for either Germany or Baden-Württemberg: The highest temperature measured in June in Baden-Württemberg was 38.9 degrees on June 30, 2019 in Mannheim.

Fatal swimming accident in Stuttgart

The beautiful weather also has its sad sides: a man died in a swimming accident in Stuttgart’s Neckar. The 50-year-old was rescued from the water after half an hour on Saturday afternoon and died in hospital after an unsuccessful resuscitation, the police said on Sunday. According to witness statements, he had met an acquaintance near the Wilhelmsbrücke to drink alcohol and suddenly jumped into the Neckar.

Due to the heat and drought, there are warnings about making fires in the forest. The DWD indicates the risk of forest fires in the southwest as high to very high.

Weather report: Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail possible

And it can also be uncomfortable on Sunday and Monday night: According to the DWD, individual thunderstorms with heavy rain of up to 35 liters per square meter in a short time, gusts of wind around 80 km/h and small-grain hail are not excluded on Sunday afternoon and in the evening. The focal points for thunderstorms:
