Almost every day in Rome, neighborhoods are cordoned off for film crews, roads are blocked, and cars are towed away. This is a nuisance for the residents – and bad business for the city.

And then four elephants turn onto the Imperial Forums, in a sea of red flags from the Partito Comunista Italiano, with the Colosseum in the background. The air is dusty dry. A few dozen passers-by are standing at the side of the road and excitedly taking pictures. It’s not that the Romans still wonder about animals in their city. There are enough on the way, seagulls, rats, beavers, wild boars in packs. But elephants on the Fori Imperiali? That’s a different number.
