In a very general sense, even in a “sterotyped” way, there are many indications that the Italian population, as a whole, appears to be less prone to changes, especially those that are important and that affect everyone, such as money. This is a “strong” consideration and certainly not indicative, but it has led a large part of the population to have greater difficulties in adapting to the euro. Exactly 20 years later, however, the single currency appears to have been accepted, but like any currency the process of evolution is always underway, leading to the disappearance of the euro banknotes.
Goodbye to cash?
This is not “official” news, but the logical consequence of a now widespread trend: in general physical money is considered “expendable” compared to electronic money, preferred for a purely practical matter: bank transfers, cards and ATMs represent a reality already rooted and more compatible with respect to coins and banknotes which, by their very nature, “escape” checks very easily.
Moreover, the intention of the European Central Bank is precisely to limit, albeit gradually, the number of banknotes used. After all, changes are already underway, such as the production process of banknotes which led to the abandonment of the production of the 500 banknote. euroused above all by illicit trafficking and therefore of little use to the rest of the citizenry.
“The euro banknotes will disappear”: the news shocks everyone
Although the ECB has long ago communicated that all 500 euro banknotes will still be valid forever, even the 200 euro could “disappear” from production starting with the next series of EU banknotes to be announced starting in 2024. The reason is similar to that explained for the 500 euro just now, that is to reduce the quantity of banknotes, especially those of high denomination, and to maintain, at least for the near future, the “small” and “medium” ones.
