Airports introduce quotas on the number of flights or passengers. After Amsterdam and London’s Gatwick

The reason for the limitation is the lack of staff.

Lack of staff forces the first European airports to take an unusual step. It determines the maximum number of flights or passengers they will check in per day.

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam announced the first new ceiling. For each day, the maximum limits change according to the airport forecasts. The highest number will be 67,500 passengers in July and 72,500 in August. The airport operator thus responds to the chaos, which due to the lack of ground staff leads to long queues and delays or even cancellations.

“A very tight labor market means that there are very few security staff available.” stated the airport. Without quotas, more passengers would not be able to board in time. According to the airport, the demand for flying has grown significantly more than they expected.

This is not a small constraint for carriers: 13,500 aircraft seats are planned above the maximum limit in July. The largest carrier at the airport, KLM, will want financial compensation from the airport. The Dutch airport boss Dick Benschop faces sharp criticism that he went on vacation at a time of great crisis.

London’s second largest airport, Gatwick, has joined the cut. The carrier has already asked carriers to cut a total of up to 75 flights each day: from 900 to 825 flights. The reason is also the lack of staff.

Many large European carriers have already preventively canceled part of the scheduled flights for the main season.
