death of two octogenarians at the beach in Pornichet

An 82-year-old man became unwell while swimming in Pornichet, and an 80-year-old man was found dead on a beach. No link has yet been established with the heat wave.

Two octogenarians died this Friday afternoon in Pornichet without a link being able to be established with the current heat wave, Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned from the Loire-Atlantique prefecture.

Firefighters were called shortly before 4 p.m. to an 82-year-old man who became unwell while swimming, firefighters said. The person could not be revived.

Around 4:40 p.m., the firefighters were again called to the same town for an 80-year-old man found dead by witnesses on the beach of La Bonne Source, they said.

No link established for the moment with the heat wave

“We do not know if these deaths are related to the heat”, commented the prefecture.

For their part, the firefighters refused to give any further details.

Although on the coast the temperature is usually lower than that recorded inland, the Loire-Atlantique is, like a large part of the west and south-west of France, currently hit by an exceptional wave of heat in this season.
