RB Leipzig has signed Wolfsburg’s Xaver Schlager. The 24-year-old Austrian received a contract with the Saxon Bundesliga club until June 30, 2026. Both clubs announced this on Friday. “I’m very happy that I took the step into the German Bundesliga and was immediately well received by VfL. It was a very nice and formative time for me, in which I learned a lot. But for me it is now time to take the next step, »said Schlager.
The midfielder moved from RB sister club Red Bull Salzburg to VfL in 2019 and was under contract there until 2023. According to media reports, the Lower Saxony will therefore receive a transfer fee of twelve million euros for the Austrian international, who was seriously injured twice during his time in Wolfsburg. First he broke his ankle in 2019, then in August 2021 of all things in the game against RB Leipzig a cruciate ligament rupture was added. He only celebrated his comeback at the beginning of March.
After Schlager’s commitment, RB has a clear oversupply in midfield. The club is also keen to keep Schlager’s national teammate Konrad Laimer, who has been repeatedly linked with FC Bayern Munich, for the coming season. The contract, which expires next summer, is to be improved and extended, in return Laimer could receive an exit clause from 2023. However, talks are still ongoing. Amadou Haidara and Tyler Adams should then have little future, because head coach Domenico Tedesco wants and needs to downsize his squad urgently.
