New York/Berlin (MH) – The President and CEO of the New York Philharmonic, Deborah Borda, is retiring at the end of June 2023. She will be succeeded on July 1, 2023 by Gary Ginstling, previously conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Washington. The Philharmoniker announced this on Friday.

As early as November 1st, Ginstling will become Executive Director in New York. Borda will remain with the Orchestra in a newly created position as Executive Advisor to the President and Board of Directors.
“Deborah was a remarkable and inspired leader at a time of unprecedented challenge,” said Philharmonic Board Co-Chairs Peter W. May and Oscar L. Tang. The 72-year-old has led the NY Phil since 2017, from 1991 to 1999 she was its manager. In the meantime she was the leader of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Borda welcomed the choice of her successor. Ginstling is a trustworthy colleague whose track record speaks for itself. “The challenging cultural ecosystem of our time requires vision, knowledge and courage. Gary embodies all three. His training as a musician, his experience as CEO of major US orchestras and his background in communications and technology are a perfect fit for the NY Phil.”
Ginstling called his appointment a unique honor. “The NY Phil was my ‘hometown’ orchestra growing up and played a big part in instilling a love for the art form in me,” he said. The future of the Philharmonic looks bright with the reopening of its concert hall, the David Geffen Hall. “I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
