Explosion on IJburg, several windows smashed

Residents of the Jean Desmetstraat in IJburg were startled by an explosion this evening. The police started an investigation.

Around 9 p.m., a large number of reports of a very loud bang were received by the police. “We are investigating whether it is indeed an explosive,” said a police spokesman. “It was a huge shock for residents, who were probably still enjoying the warm summer evening.”

In addition to the fire brigade, ambulance personnel were also called. A man is checked in the ambulance.

Several windows have been broken. Police have cordoned off part of the street. An agent of the Explosives Reconnaissance Team (TEV) goes to see if the situation is safe. There are also detectives on the way.

Just before 10 p.m., the police let Burgernet know to be looking for a suspect because of a ‘suspicious situation’ in the Jean Desmetstraat.

About an hour after the explosion on IJburg, a report was also received about an explosion on the Stuurmankade on Borneo Island. There appeared to be no connection with the earlier explosion: it was an exploded battery of an electric scooter.

No one was injured. A fire service spokesperson emphasizes that people should not leave these types of batteries unattended on the wall socket.
