Ohio allows teachers to carry guns after school shootings
The shooting at an Ohio community center occurred the same day Gov. Mike DeWine signed a law allowing teachers and other staff to be armed with firearms in schools once they complete 24 hours of initial training.
The gun law has been widely criticized by civil rights groups and teachers’ unions, while Ohio law enforcement groups and school districts have endorsed it.
The Republican-backed bill reduces required training hours for armed school personnel from 700 to 24, according to the legislation.
The Ohio governor said examples of unnecessary training included patrolling in a police cruiser, stopping a vehicle, investigating a traffic accident and operating a radar.
