Although in 2020 we hardly left the house, the pandemic caused a big change in the Botox industry: it became super popular. A report on plastic surgery statistics during that year shows that 15.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2020, most of them being minimally invasive.
One of those popular procedures was (and is) a lip flip. According to Healthline, the lip flip is a quick, in-office procedure that involves a medical professional inserting Botox into your upper lip, or more correctly said, Cupid’s bow. As the muscles relax from the injections, the inner lip flips up, making the lips appear fuller.
This pouty lip trend gained momentum in 2015, thanks to makeup influencers like Kylie Jenner, who has become synonymous with the pouty lip look. According to Dazed Digital, after Kylie Jenner told the public about her lip procedure, the internet went crazy looking for lip fillers and the desire for full lips has only increased ever since. But how much exactly does this procedure cost?

The price of Botox can vary. In fact, what you pay for a Botox treatment can depend on a number of factors, including where you receive the service and from whom (a board-certified plastic surgeon vs. a medical spa), according to Cosmopolitan. But in general, you should expect to pay between $19 and $25 per unit, so the larger the area you want to treat, the more expensive it will be.
Simply put, Botox injections to the forehead can cost anywhere from $250 to $600, while smaller areas like crow’s feet or lips won’t hit your wallet as much. If you’re looking for fuller lips, you can expect to pay between $80 and $500 for a lip flip procedure, according to Healthline. This is a pretty big price range, so be sure to do your research before committing. According to Women’s Health, many places charge per unit, while others charge a flat fee per procedure, so make sure you know what you’re getting into before you sign up.
What to expect from a lip flip
Although the lip lift is non-surgical and fairly simple (in fact, according to Healthline, it only takes 10 to 20 minutes), there is still a risk when it comes to any type of cosmetic procedure. Most people opt for a lip flip to achieve fuller lips, but you can also choose this procedure to reduce wrinkles around your mouth and cover your gums when you smile (via Cleveland Clinic).
Before undergoing a lip flip, your doctor will review your health status, making sure you are fit for the procedure. According to the Cleveland Clinic, most doctors will advise you to stop drinking, smoking, and even taking aspirin a week before the operation takes place. On the day of the intervention, the doctor will inject Botox in the upper lip and in the corners of the mouth. After a quick check, you will be sent home and told to ice your lips and to avoid kissing, using straws and applying any lip products. The final results should last, on average, between two and five months. Let’s frown!
