JAKARTA – Indonesian National team seniors will still be coached by Shin Tae-yong. It was known after the Indonesian national team arrived in the country, Thursday (16/6/2022).
The decision was taken because of Shin Tae-yong’s success in qualifying the Indonesian national team for the 2023 Asian Cup. As is known, the Indonesian national team qualified via the five best runners-up in the third round of the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification.
“We have discussed it again. So, the senior national team is still held by Shin because of yesterday’s extraordinary results,” said PSSI General Chair Mochamad Iriawan in Jakarta, quoted from BetweenThursday (16/6/2022).
“However, we will continue to discuss again with the person concerned (Shin Tae-yong). If for example he still wants to coach the U-23 national team, go ahead,” said Iriawan.
Previously, PSSI had planned to focus on Shin Tae-yong to train the U-19 Indonesian National Team. It made Shin Tae-yong lose his position in the senior Indonesian national team and U-23.
This was considered because PSSI saw that it was difficult for Shin Tae-yong to manage three national teams at once. However, the situation changed after the Indonesian national team qualified for the 2023 Asian Cup.
The Indonesian national team locked a slot in the 2023 Asian Cup because it won the status of the five best runners-up. Please note, only the six group winners and the best five runners-up will get the remaining 11 tickets for the 2023 Asian Cup.
Thus, the Indonesian national team will make their fifth appearance in the Asian Cup. Previously, the Garuda squad competed in the Asian Cup in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2007. After 16 years, the Indonesian national team will again compete in the Asian Cup in 2023.
