Microsoft has trained more than 49 thousand people in the Dominican Republic and will continue to offer free specialized courses until 2025

With Microsoft’s Skilling Initiative, millions use free skills programs to find career opportunities

To date, Microsoft has 37 alliances in 11 countries in the region and partnerships with various non-profit organizations and governments.

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic – Microsoft delivers on its commitment to empowering people, communities, and countries, reaching a milestone of more than 1,400,000 people trained until March 2022, to help create alternative, flexible and accessible paths to well-paid job opportunities in Latin America. To give everyone the chance to get the right job opportunities, Microsoft offers free courses and training through 2025 to close the skills gap and accelerate an inclusive economic recovery.

Since the Microsoft Skilling Initiative began, the goal has always been to reach underserved communities, women and minorities, helping them improve their economic situation through their insertion in the labor market to improve their livelihoods. “We need to prepare people for the changing reality facing this region and the world. While technology has been a lifeline for the activities of many companies, organizations, and individuals, it also presents very specific challenges in terms of access, education, and skills in Latin America. As a technology company, Microsoft has an important role to play by doing its part to ensure that digital tools have a positive impact for every person and organization,” said Jorge Cella, regional director of philanthropy for the Americas at Microsoft.

To date, the Global Skilling Initiative has impacted more than 49,512 people in Dominican Republic translating into stories that show the real impact that training leveraged with available technology has on people and entire communities. Likewise, it resulted in 41,585 certified people and 142 connected to employment or life opportunities.

Part of Microsoft’s vision is that all organizations in Latin America should promote and enhance the inclination to acquire and adopt lifelong knowledge. For its part, Microsoft has to date 37 alliances with 11 countries in the region, and alliances with various non-profit organizations and governments. It is through this strong network of partners that Microsoft multiplies knowledge and develops digital skills for NGO trainers, skills to help them find a job or get a better job.

Some of the non-profit organizations we have worked with through the initiative are ATN, Recode, Insitituto Crescer, Softex (Escola do Trabalhador) and Banco Bradesco, in Brazil. Televisa Foundation and Building and Growing, in Mexico and Trust for the Americas and EIDOs in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, El Salvador and Uruguay.

Through the Global Skilling Initiative, different courses and training are offered within Microsoft’s Skills for Jobs and Income strategy, such as:

  • Los Digital Literacy courses they focus on teaching the basics to people who have no knowledge of how to access and use technology (using the Internet, accessing information online, creating and managing digital content, basic cybersecurity concepts, and online responsibility).
  • Los fundamental skills courses teach people how to use technology productively, focusing on most of the Office tools that are in high demand in the job market (Excel, PowerPoint, Teams Word, OneDrive, SharePoint, and the basics of programming/web design ). We also offer training related to employability.
  • Some partners offer career paths (Data Analyst, Software Developer, among others). And others teach Life Skills courses to specific audiences (violence prevention, accessibility, empowerment of people with disabilities).

Today more than ever it is understood that training is a lifelong journey. While it has always been critical, our digital world requires new ways of working, making learning key to a person’s long-term success. This is a broad commitment to help students, job seekers, and employees gain the skills they need to succeed in today’s digital economy.
