Why is the 2022 World Cup taking place in winter?
The venue for this year’s World Cup is the Gulf state of Qatar. The World Cup was awarded to the Qataris in 2010. However, it was only decided five years later that the World Cup would not take place until winter.
The reason for moving the games to the winter months was that it is simply too hot in Qatar in the summer for football to be played responsibly. The prevailing 40 degrees in the summer months could cause health problems for both players and spectators.
Qatar initially presented ideas for gigantic cooling systems that would cool down the stadiums to temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees, but these projects were rejected. Nevertheless, the stadiums will probably also be cooled in winter in order to be able to push the temperatures down a bit.
As already mentioned, the World Cup in Qatar has been the subject of much discussion since it was awarded. Again and again there are reports about the outstanding wage payments and bad working conditions for the guest workers at the stadiums in Qatar. There is also talk of thousands of deaths in the course of the construction of the stadiums. Nevertheless, the 2022 World Cup will take place, and the German team will also fight for the title.
